The Horned Serpent

So before I get started on this one, I have a couple of things to get out of the way. First, I will be using she/her pronouns for the Horned Serpent; this is just because UPG and because I'm used to it. I know someone else who venerates/worships the Horned Serpent, uses they/them pronouns for them, and considers them to be beyond gender / present as whatever gender they feel like. Second, I will be focusing on my interpretation of her on the Gundestrup Cauldron, in part because there's really not a lot of literature on her, even when you include works that specifically analyze Cernunnos' depictions. Third (and related), I will be using the National Museum of Denmark's estimate as to when/where the Gundestrup Cauldron was made, which is roughly in the Danubian or Wallachian Plain(s) around 150 BCE to 1 CE (link).

So first a little historical & cultural context. This area, as far as culture groups, would have been a heck of a melting pot, between the Dacians and Thracians that already lived there, the Scythians coming in and also living near by, the Gauls that moved in around the 300s-200s, the Greeks who came up and started establishing colonies along the Black Sea in the 300s, and the Romans, encroaching on everyone's business around the time the Cauldron was built. A pretty solid primer on the history of the region is A Companion to Ancient Thrace, published by Wiley Blackwell.

So I'm gonna try to make sense but it might be a little disorganized going forward. Anyway, onto the actual thoughts & stuff. So anyone who's taken even a passing glance at Cernunnos is well aware of the Horned Serpent, since she is present in basically every ancient art you can find with him. On the Gundestrup Cauldron, she appears three times, all on the interior panels. One is at the Hero's heel, who's holding the wheel; a second is at the end of a line of heroic riders, which seems to be a Thracian horseman motif; and of course the famous Cernunnos panel. In Thracian Tales of the Gundestrup Cauldron, published by Najade Press, Jan Best presents an interpretation of the interior panels as a story, and assumes that Cernunnos is singing in his famous panel, specifically about the secrets of immortality, a concept which was very popular at the time. I agree with this and I also assume that the depiction of Taranis / the wheel god is that he is also singing, and if he is singing then the lions and griffins - both predators associated with kingship (griffins were protectors of the pharaoh, and also decorated certain tombs out in ancient Persia), then the action of passing off the Wheel must have symbolic meaning, such as being handed the Wheel of Heaven.

The Gundestrup Cauldron's exterior also has very clear influence from the Scythians, you can almost 1:1 map the gods based on Herodotus's retelling of the Pontic stories. I believe there are also thematic parallels going on here on the Wheel God panel, featuring a new god/king being given the symbol of his domain. Wikipedia actually has some relatively thorough articles on Scythian religion as well as the genealogical myth specifically, which is the myth that I personally associate with the wheel-giving panel. As well, the animals in this panel don't appear to be particularly concerned with attacking anyone - if anything, the griffins and lionesses are slightly tilted from one to the next, which makes me think it's more likely that they are dancing, especially if the human/divine subjects are singing, especially if the human with the helmet is receiving a high honor, potentially his rank amongst the gods. In this panel, she is just at the hero's feet, not really joining the parade if the animals, but clearly not ready to attack either, but her attention does seem to be drawn towards the hero.

The final panel she is on is the panel featuring the nine soldiers and the heroized dead, represented by the "Thracian horseman" motif. After Alexander the Great and his penchant for having statues of himself be on horseback, it became popular for wealthy men and nobles to depict themselves riding horseback to a goddess or sacred tree (unfortunately my best source discussing this in English is also not great and he comes up with some..... questionable theories), but the popularity seems to have blown up to the point where even deities such as Zeus were depicted on horseback in a similar manner. There are also mentions in a few other sources that the Thracians believed in the ability for people to essentially become immortal after death. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble sorting out my notes and this essay has been nagging me for weeks now.

Anyway, I interpret this panel as what is expected to happen to us after we die - the "ordinary", so to speak, are lead to a deity, likely to be reincarnated (this is honestly just a guess on my part largely due to the popularity of that in Greece for ever, and Grecian influence was in full swing by the time the Cauldron was made), meanwhile the "extraordinary" are lead by the Horned Serpent.

This is where I tie all three together to my upg/theology: The Horned Serpent is a friend and ally to Cernunnos. He teaches the secrets of life after death to those who will listen. The Horned Serpent is by his side during his teaching, and when we die, if we have proven ourselves worthy during life, she guides us through the trials of the afterlife. If we succeed in these trials, we are awarded with apotheosis - becoming a god or godlike - and she stands by our side as we earn this prize.

Listen to a recorded document of the conceptual exhibition 'Art by Telephone' at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969.

Inspired in part by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's “telephone pictures” (for which the artist dictated his design for works over the phone to a fabricator, emphasizing the fact that an intellectual approach to the creation of art was not inferior to an emotional approach), Art by Telephonewas an extremely influential conceptually driven exhibition in the MCA's early history. Occurring at a time when the art world was moving away from minimalism and in a more conceptual direction, Art by Telephone asked artists from the United States and Europe to communicate their ideas for artworks over the telephone to MCA curator David H. Katzive. MCA staff then executed the works based on the artists' oral instructions, avoiding all blueprints and written plans. After six weeks, all of the works exhibited in Art by Telephonewere either destroyed or disposed of by the museum.

Some of the artists involved, such as Richard Hamilton and Wolf Vostell, approached the project with a more literal interpretation of the thematic. Vostell mailed a calendar of changing phone numbers from Germany. Visitors dialed the numbers to receive instructions for one-minute happenings. A Sol LeWitt wall drawing was produced with the help of assistants, and Robert Smithson constructed a varied version of his “non-site,” asking that a pile of cement be poured down a steep hill and then photographed for display in the galleries.

The exhibition included installations that relied heavily on audience participation, such as Arman's famous trashcans. The artist asked people to contribute their own waste to the enclosed Plexiglas area. Once it was filled to the brim, the work was considered complete.

Others, such as William Wegman's Third Day, embraced natural occurrences. Third Dayconsisted of a trough, built in the shape of the letters spelling out “third day,” that was filled with water and covered with vermiculite. The water evaporated in three days, exposing the words engraved on the floor.

The exhibition was dedicated to Marcel Duchamp and John Cage, who declined to participate. However, most if not all artists who did accept the museum’s invitation, were influenced by one or both in some way, accepting the idea of process and experience over finished object.

Television Series

Post 1:

The television series that I picked for this project was Sex Education. This show follows the lives of teenagers and adults who live is the fictional town of Moordale. The main characters and whose lives we follow the closest are those of Otis Milburn, Maeve Wiley, Eric Effiong, Aimee Gibbs, Adam Groff, Jackson Marchetti, Jean Milburn among others. We observe their lives and from which are able to understand and explore human connection and emotion. One of the main reasons I picked this show to analyze is due to the overall human representation and intersectionality. Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw states that, “intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. It’s not simply that there’s a race problem here, a gender problem here, and a class or LBGTQ problem there. Many times that framework erases what happens to people who are subject to all of these things” (Kimberlé). Race, religion, along with sexuality are all main topics talked about in the show. Our course talked a lot about intersectionality and how it can present itself in people in different ways. For example, one of the main characters, Eric, is a Black British-Nigerian gay man from a Christian household. Eric’s family are immigrants from Nigeria who are strict Christians which particularly plays a role in his self-expression (Sex Education). Eric is also an openly gay man which intersects and clashes with his family’s religious beliefs in additions to society’s. The way he expresses himself with colorful fashion, makeup, and drag all defy societal and religious norms, exacerbating the challenges he has to face. Eric’s identity as a Black gay man in a religious household and racist, homophobic school environment, highlights the struggles that he has to face with his intersectionality. In addition to Eric, the character Aimee Gibbs presents, in my opinion, an interesting and important take on intersectionality. Aimee had undergone sexual assault which resulted in trauma (Sex Education). Aimee’s struggle to understand and articulate her assault stresses systemic issues of power and sexism as well as emphasizes societal pressures on women to deal with and overcome trauma quickly. Moreover, Aimee is from a working-class background and her journey depicts how socioeconomic status can have effects on one’s access to resources and emotional support after facing a traumatic event. Another topic that has been addressed throughout our class is that of identity and belonging. An example of understanding and exploring one’s identity that can be seen in the series is that of the character, Jackson Marchetti. Jackson is a mixed-race head boy of a predominately white school who experiences intense academic and athletic expectations and undergoes pressures relating to Black resilience stereotypes and his mental health (Sex Education). Moreover, in the series Jackson is raised by two white gay mothers which leads to him questioning and navigating his identity and feel of belonging (Sex Education). This TV series, Sex Education, does a great job reflecting and underscoring the multitude of experiences people can face and how their backgrounds such as race, sexuality, gender, and religion can all impact their lives.

During the CTS A session, I realized that critical thinking plays a significant role in our daily lives and across different fields. To illustrate this, I created a mind map centered around 6WH questions related to critical thinking. The main takeaway was that critical thinking enables us to make better choices, bringing us closer to our ultimate goals while enhancing our cognitive abilities and execution skills (Kallet). When I compared my activities before and after incorporating critical thinking, I noticed a marked improvement in the practicality and professionalism of my results, which made me feel like I had grown in multiple ways.

I also made an effort to apply critical thinking to other subjects. For instance, in Studio 1, I observed a noticeable enhancement in research skills, communication, and information evaluation. My observational skills improved through various activities, and I learned how to effectively organize and document the information I gathered on Research Framework, Type & Language, and Hollywood Bling, allowing me to evaluate it for optimal outcomes. Additionally, I found that techniques like Visual Thinking, Typo Sensory, and Data Space helped me improve my technical skills and communication methods.

The Craft Workshop was instrumental in fostering creativity and visualizing ideas as a whole. It provided a chance to organize my thoughts and encouraged me to keep asking questions throughout all activities, from mark-making to abstraction. In photography, I practiced critical thinking in various ways, such as identifying problems and making decisions about subjects. These two subjects, in particular, aided me develop well-rounded and creatively insightful critical thinking skills through the use of different visual tools.

To wrap it up, in the realm of Digital Skills & Applications, I focused on honing my skills with Adobe. I also took the time to evaluate how the content and form connect, checking for any issues with the visual language I'm aiming to convey (Lee). This ongoing exploration helps me achieve great results. Ultimately, this entire journey fosters growth and enhancement through critical thinking.

Ideal temperature range:

Most paving experts recommend laying asphalt when the ambient temperature is between 50°F and 90°F to achieve optimal contraction and compaction. 

Monitoring ground temperature:

It's crucial to check the ground temperature beneath where the asphalt will be laid, as it can be significantly cooler than the air temperature, potentially impacting the cooling process of the asphalt. 

Cooling before application:

If the asphalt is too hot when applied, it can cool too quickly, leading to improper bonding and potential issues. 

Impact of weather conditions:

Factors like wind can accelerate the cooling of asphalt, so consider wind speed when determining the ideal application temperature. 

Potential problems if temperature is not adjusted correctly: 

Cracking:

If asphalt cools too quickly due to a large temperature difference between the asphalt and the environment, it can contract rapidly, causing cracks to form. 

Poor compaction:

If the asphalt is too cold, it can become too stiff to properly compact, leading to a weak pavement. 

raveling:

In extreme cases, asphalt that is too cold or not properly compacted can start to crumble and deteriorate.

Despite United States Representatives Mike Flood, Wiley Nickel, Tom Emmer and Ritchie Torres calling on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to immediately approve the listing of spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the agency once again delayed its decision. When it comes to spot Ether (ETH) ETFs from VanEck and ARK 21Shares, the SEC delayed making decisions until Dec. 25 and Jan. 10, respectively, while GlobalX will have to wait until Nov. 21 for the commission’s decision. It also delayed deciding on the spot Bitcoin ETF applications of Invesco, Bitwise and Valkyrie until mid-January. The latest delays came two weeks earlier than the scheduled second deadline date for many applicants, who had been expecting to hear from the securities regulator by Oct. 16–19. The timing of the delays may have been related to the narrowly avoided U.S. government shutdown, which would have disrupted the country’s financial regulators and other federal agencies.Bitwise Asset Management reacted to the delay of its spot Bitcoin ETF with an amended application, responding to the SEC’s objections to the product. In its amended application, Bitwise engaged with what the SEC called “the ‘mixed’ or ‘inconclusive’ academic record” on the lead-lag relationship between BTC futures and spot markets. The Issue:

The cherry blossoms were going to peak early this year, and news sources from all over the capital region highlighted this as a harbinger of climate change. While an earlier Cherry BlossomFest may not seem like a big deal, last year saw Kyoto, Japan record their earliest peak bloom in 1,200 years (Christidis et al., 2022) (Primack et al., 2023). While cherry blossom trees are known to be very sensitive to temperature this, this issue has been observed and studied for years in the field of phenology - the timing of biological events - in numerous plants and animals.

Plants, especially wildflowers and native plants, face a number of environmental challenges, including changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, habitat loss and fragmentation, and increased competition from invasive species; for which we may see declines in plant populations, reduced genetic diversity in plants, reduced pollination, and overall an altered ecosystem (Willis et al., 2008) (Willis et al., 2010) (Inouye, 2022).

This is where Budburst comes in. Using phenology in the analysis of local plants over time, scientists are able to track the effects of climate change in cross-walking the data compiled by Budburst participants and other open-source information such as temperature and precipitation records. It also allows for the identification and tracking of the spread of invasive plant species.

The Project:

Created by the Chicago Botanic Gardens; Budburst is a "community-focused, data-driven approach to plant conservation" platform that allows users to take photos natively in-app and upload photos from their camera roll to document the natural beauty of plants around them.

The app allows for 3 types of observation reports: phenology, pollinator, and milkweeds & monarchs. After answering a set of multiple choice questions with an option to include detail shots, the observations are added to an interactive map to allow users to see where they have previously made observations and easily return at a later date for continued observation throughout the plant's life cycle in order to help track the effects of climate change.

Participation Plan:

I incorporated my participation in this citizen science project into walks with my dog, Juniper. I was already taking her for walks around my community 3 times a day so all it took was taking an additional 10 seconds to take a picture of plants along our routes. I took pictures and completed reports on at least 3 different plants a day over the course of my participation in the project.
